Joan Johns was born in Orbost, Victoria. Moving  around the state with her family she was exposed to many different landscapes and lives in the Wimmera in a small community with her husband. She had many roles which included painting backdrops for balls which in a sense was the genesis of her artistic life.

After a teaching career Joan attended a number of workshops with various artists which led her to complete a Diploma of Visual Arts at Federation University.

Today, she is a member of Firestation Studio in Armadale Victoria, the Horsham Artists' Society and a member of the Fed Uni group using a space on Firebrace St, Horsham under the banner of ACT Natimuk.

She has exhibited in various exhibitions and has been a finalist in a number of national art prizes.
