Blake Wardell

Blake began studying Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) in 2019 at Daito Bunka University in Saitama, Japan, while studying Japanese as a part of his Modern Languages degree on exchange. Daito Bunka happened to be the second most prestigious universities in Japan for Shodo, so with expert teaching and encouragement he continued to practice in Australia and in Japan. He has exhibited in several exhibitions in Tokyo and is currently working towards his next exhibition in Tokyo in July 2027. He continues to study and is tutored by Seicho Sensei (all Shodo disciplines) and Mukai Sensei (Kana Calligraphy) and has started working with a new Muroi Sensei (large modern calligraphy) to develop work specifically for exhibitions in Tokyo.

Blake’s Shodo name is Choho, which means walking bird.

Blake will be running a Shodo workshop on Saturday and a Shodo performance on Sunday.
