Linda Tegg- The Gathering Place

This open-air studio is a work-in-progress and part of the project, ‘Understanding place-based repair in climate affected communities - a comparative study across Australia, Sweden and the UK’. The Wimmera-Mallee project team (lead land artist Linda Tegg, with Emily Potter, Brigid Magner, and D’Arcy Molan) with the blessing of Pauline and Jack Schmidt (owners of the Natimuk West End Dairy) are creatively activating the site post-fire using local plants, temporary structures, and incorporating the expertise of a range of people and organisations. The project includes guidance from Elizabeth Mace (Dalki Garringa Native Nursery - BGLC), construction by local builder Lincoln Shepherd, and works from garden builder Michael Hatton. With the support of ACT Natimuk and the intention of further development over time with a variety of local groups and artists, this is the first event of the three-year project, and will include an artist talk by Linda Tegg, a music performance, and more. Linda Tegg is a Melbourne-based Artist who makes work out of inhabiting and reconfiguring the conditions of spectatorship. Within her immersive installations, images, plants, animals, and the built environment are brought into unlikely proximities to generate new points of orientation and relation. Tegg’s speculative practice invites a reshaping the human-within-nature-relationship.

Collaboration characterises much of Tegg’s work. In 2024, she collaborated with Balladong Wadjuk Yorga woman and medicinal plant expert Vivienne Hansen on “Wetland”, a mass assembly of water and edible endemic plants in a decommissioned food court for the Perth Festival. In 2018, she served as the co-creative director, alongside Baracco+Wright Architects, of “Repair,” Australia’s representative exhibition at the 16th International Architecture Biennale Venice. Additionally, she was the inaugural artist in residence at the School of Geography at The University of Melbourne. In 2014, she collaborated with horticultural scientist John Delpratt to grow ‘Grasslands’, a site-responsive public artwork at the State Library of Victoria.

Tegg’s artwork engages with cultural institutions and public space and has been widely exhibited in Australia, the United States, and Europe. She was the Samstag Scholar of 2014 and the Georges Mora Foundation Fellow of 2012. Tegg has degrees from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Melbourne, and RMIT University.

This creative research site in the Victorian Wimmera-Mallee is part of an Australian Research Council funded project led by Deakin University, in partnership with RMIT University, Macquarie University, Linköping University, and Newcastle University. The broader project also has sites in New South Wales Northern Rivers (Australia), Western Australia Perth-Peel (Australia), Gotland (Sweden), and Northeast England (UK).

The Understanding Place based Repair team will be holding a walkshop on Sunday morning and a Community Symposium and Performance Sunday afternoon.
